i honestly have no idea, but i hear that they attack each other until one comes out dominant. like my name says, i am a noob at aquariums, so please don't blame me and my unintellagence.:grinyes:

nope...bettas are anabantoids like gouramis (fish with an auxilary labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe oxygen from the surface when in nasty water)

bettas and most of their realtives are very territorial, especially the males...which is why it is not good to have more than one in an aquarium...otherwise they are not very aggressive

Well, all fish do establish social hierarchy where the most dominant one will lead the group or harass them.;)
