hi all, in order for the female apple to lay her eggs does the water level need to be low before she will lay them, or would she just lay them??

also, is there any signs to tell if she is about to lay her eggs?

They have to lay their eggs above the water, so if the water level isn't lowered she may lay them on the hood or even go "exploring" outside the tank.

As far as knowing when she's going to lay, you probably will just have to keep an eye out for when she starts heading for the surface a lot. Not sure if there's anything really definitive to warn you.

you could look at www.applesnail.net (http://www.applesnail.net) for more info on breeding

soobie is exactly right. if you think she might be laying soon, lower the water level a couple of inches. this will encourage her to lay, and also discourage her from going exploring. i had a female brig who ended up holed up in her shell behind the tank for a couple days because she went looking for a place to lay, and fell behind the tank stand, where i couldn't find her. she recovered, fortunately, but it's always a good idea to provide a proper place for females to lay their clutches.
