I've this hybrid. His mother was heart-shape blood parrot, but we don't know what was his sire. I bought him at the fish store, sold as Blood Parrot. He is quite aggressive. He had killed his sister and ate one of my blood parrot.

Anyway can be able to identify him? His head looks somewhat like Midas. He didn't have that hump when I got him. Now his hump is getting bigger.

Here is a pic.

wat a ****en piece of **** fish, sorry but that thing disgusts me. I hate wen people crossbreed and come up wit ugly things like that. But to answer your question, maybe the dad was a RD or gold severum.

I personally don't think that it is a hybrid.

I think that it just may be a really bad deformed fish that happened to survive the perils of growing up.

I had a similar rainbow cichlid deformed fry that I left figuring that it would die or be killed by the other fish. Low and behold the tough little SOB survived 2 years before dying in a teritorial fight with another fish.

Just my opinion I could very well be wrong though.

My fish is a natural hybrid. His mother is blood parrot that actually laid eggs. You got the idea. Homer (my fish) didn't ask to be here and that doesn't mean he shouldn't have a chance to live his life.

He might be disgusting to you, shyguyjon, but he is a beauty to me. If you look around you, on cichlids. There are many hybrid. FlowerHorn is also hybrid.

I heard about deformity. However, his sister was also like that, without tail. Homer killed his sister and one of the biggest blood parrot and he took some skin off another blood parrot. He got sharp teeth. No problem with swimming and eating. Heck! He even chased my Green Terror off the tank. I mean off the tank as in JUMPING OFF THE TANK. I'm sure you heard of many stories that Green Terror is mean. And my Dusty (Green Terror) was bigger than Homer. Dusty survived the fall but he died later from unknown disease.

If you look at the picture I put in this forum, you would see there is another fish there. That fish (Jade) is also a natural hybrid, crossed between blood parrot and red devil. Well, I guess I love rescuing problem fish, huh? Jade is totally cornered and no match to Homer. Right now I'm trying to look for a tank mate for Homer. It is hard. He already chased my Dusty to craze. What other fish can I put in?

Here is closed up of Homer's face.

I also include Dusty picture. He got a gash on his head from jumping the tank and hitting the tank cover. He was a beautiful little guy.

AHHH! my old blood parrot's name was homer too!

Really? Cool! The reason my boyfriend and I named Homer Homer because he looked like it when we got him. Now...well, his personality is way too mean to be Homer.

Here is some of my Blood Parrots. I love this picture. They all look like the "Curious Bunch" staring me down. Haha...

People shouldn't argue the existence of blood parrots. They are great fish with hilarious personalities... me and danny named my old blood parrot homer from the simpsons... then again, homer wouldn't defend a pot from oncoming convicts either... hehe

Oh My God! Hahaha...we named our fish for that same reason. Homer Simpsons.

Yeah, I think Blood Parrot has great personality. Every time I feed them...I called them by their name. Now they recognize the vibration of my voice. They come out when I call certain fish. When my brother comes to visit...they run for their lives because they don't recognize my brother's voice.

One of my parrot is the boss in the tank. He ruled everyone. If he sees some fish fighting...he comes between them. Even my severums are scared of him. He lets me pet him whenever I want to. The only time he will attack me (which is harmless) is when I mess with his home during cleaning. My parrot even got a second in commend. When he needs help to keep the tank in order (especially introducing new fish)...my yellow parrot comes to help.

Totally funny to watch.

I know....and his behavior is started to change to Red Devil to. It is scary sometimes how he attacked other fish. Then again...it is a free for all Pay-Per-View to me.

I just have to wait a bit more. He is still very young...not yet 10 months old. His body only 2", including his tails will be 4".

Someone told that this fish had Convict gene. I doubt that heavily when one only observed the tail and not the face and behavior of the fish. I've seen some fish that are male Red Devil with great pointy dorsel fin. I can't wait for my Homer to grow up. :D

yea, whatever it is i'd imagine it'll be a very fun fish to raise.

He looks every bit Red Devil to me, just deformed. At any rate, he deserves a long life full of killing and mauling which is his nature. :)

Yea I think he must be like 3/4 red devil or something he can actually close his mouth.

Oh...he enjoys killing. He already killed his own sister. Unearth all the gravel to his little satisfaction (even destroyed a plant).

The only fish he would not harm was my old Blood Parrot. Homer actually followed my Parrot every where until I moved my parrot into another tank. Now they just look at each other from the other side of the tank (I needed my Blood Parrot to control all those fish in the big tank).

I will keep some of his update pictures here. :)

Thanks for helping me clarified who might be his sire.

there is at tank where I work that used to have a silver arrowana and 6 or so parrots in it, I guess the arowana died, cause one day I came in and they had added 4 gold severums, and I think either a midas or a red devil I am not sure. The tank is a bit more lively now though heh. two of the parrots in that tank have the same fin structure as that fish but they are obviously parrots as they cannot close thier mouth. Too bad about your saum they are my favorite.

I never knew there were so many kinds of Blood Parrot. I found that out in Singapore website about Blood Parrot, there was unicorn, heart-shape, and some I don't know the name, but they look like they were punch around to look like a swell head :P

Blood Parrots are hybrid between a red devil and severum. I guess another reason my Homer was so taken with that Old Blood Parrot. I also think Homer wished to mate with my Blood Parrot since they are same of the kind. Maybe one day I will put them back together and see what happen.

If Homer is that aggressive with the temperment of Red Devil, maybe I will try to find another Red Devil to breed them. I wonder what kind of fish will come out of that union. :D

Mine just love to boss everyone around. I have one tank houses only Blood Parrots and Severums. I call one of my Blood Parrot, Boss, but his real name I gave him is Orange.

My aggressive BP...well, he is still re-arranging things around. Has been picking on my other fish, many of them have torn fins. He does make me worry about his tank mates. Tough little guy. Who knows...I might end up getting him convicts for tank mate. Hahaha...then maybe he will realize there are other tough fish. :D

Yeah...to bad that it died...being chased to death by that mean Parrot.

Guess what? He (Homer) killed another fish...my oscar.

He really has a very bad temper, this Homer. He is 4" the most in that 90 gallon tank. If my hand touch the glass...he smacks himself against the glassm try to bite my hand. If I look at him too closely...he does the same thing.

I've decided...I'm going to the LFS and get another GT to see what happened. Let's hope this next GT will be more aggressive than the last one. If it doesn't work...I guess I will get the next aggressive fish.

dave76
07-01-2003, 11:58 AM
With that temperment I would check out what they have at the LFS and make sure he could hold his own before you even consider it. Maybe a Jag, flowerhorn, trimac or a fish of that ilk could put homer in his place.

peifc
07-01-2003, 12:09 PM
Oh...I'm sure they will. Trimac, FH, Jag, Dovii...yeah...very likely they will kill Homer :)

I guess I will have to find out from the LHS. They have quite some fish collection there. GT wasn't his match, especially GT was bigger than Homer. Or maybe my GT was too timid to go against Homer. That's why I'm thinking to give it another try by getting another GT.

Maybe Convict or JD will work for Homer too. If I still can't find a tankmate...I guess I will have to go and get a Red Devil female for Homer to temp him down :p

dave76

I didnt mean to kill him, I meant the agression level you have described might better match one of those, of course I dont think he would tolerate a juvenile of any form, but you never know. I introduced a female convict in recently with my GT who is about 4" and chased everything in the tank. I cycled a 10 gal just incase the convict wasnt taken to well, especially since she was just an inch or so long, but he seems to really dig her, they hang out together all the time and circle each other and shake a lot. The size difference is substantial and the GT still picks on the other fish in the tank but he really seems to dig her. I guess its just the luck of the draw. I hope you can find a tank mate for Homer. Wonder how big he will get. How old is he?

peifc
07-01-2003, 3:05 PM
He is 10 months old the most. He grows very slow...like Blood Parrot, but I think he will get to the size of Red Devil. He has started to have that like hump on him.

I've always wanted a Flowerhorn, but I'm afraid that either Homer will end up killing the Juvenile...or one day being killed when Flowerhorn gets too big :) I still don't know yet...I think I will explore what's best for him. I don't want this fish to think he is the king. :) Beside, it is time for him to realize there are other fish that isn't scared of him.

If that is your goal I would get a Jag.

Actually, my boyfriend just put in target fish for Homer to chase, Gouramis. Hahaha...that got him occupied for a while. Gouramis are too flexable for him. And it looks like Homer is having fun chasing the Gold G. The Blue G just sat there watching the show/chase. Homer being a bit slow...he is trying to catch the tail in front of him. That definitely reminded me of Homer Simpson :p

After getting some information from you guys...getting a tank mate for him will have to think through a lot more. I like this fish a lot, but I want to see him find a fish that match his temper...and not being bullied by him.

Homer is still young. When I move...I will upgrade his tank. The corner tank (for not) is better than the 10 gallons tank he used to live in.

Thanks for the info.

Try quarantining him in a smaller tank by himself. I did that to my JD for biting most of my texas's tail off and now all he does is hide and doesn't bother anyone.

I did that for a while...in the 10 gallon tank. The other aggressive BP didn't join him until 2 months later. That's why we decided to get a bigger thank for him to swim around think maybe he needs space. MAYBE...with space...he would not kill. I was wrong.

I don't know anymore...I think he is just one of those serial fish killer :p However, he doesn't eat meat...I mean...if I put feeders in there...he will kill them, but he will not eat them. Then again...I think he has fondness for fish eyes. All those fish he killed...they all missed an eye.

He is happy right now chasing the Gold Gourami. The Gourami is way too fast for him...so...he is pretty busy whacking his tail to catch up with the Gourami. :)
