I have a 55 gallon tank. There is also a great deal of rockwork which reduces its water capacity. I use a Penquin 350 filter. To manage aggression i have overstocked my tank.
4- maingano johanni
3- melonchromis johanni
3- electric yellow labs

I do weekly water changes of 50%. Lately i have noticed my sponge gets clogged more often than it used to. When the sponge is clogged, the bio-wheel(s) stops. The filter is recommended to be changed by the manufacturer once/month. I find it needs to be rinsed one week (in tank water) and changed the next, amounting to two weeks of service. I am going to add a second filter (for safety and to ease the load, perhaps extending the life of my media) and would like suggestions as to what would be the best filter for my situation??? I am a fan of the Penquin, it does a great job and the water is very clear. With the amount of fish i have it seems another Penquin of equivelt size would be more than adequate.

i run two emperor 400's on each of my 55g tanks. the current is no trouble for the fish, and they take a long long time to show a decrease in flow. i have a black ghost knife, senegal bichir, and rubberlip pleco in one, and 2 oscars (6" and 3") and another senegal bichir in the other one, all still juveniles. i use a penguin 350 on a 30g with one black moor goldfish, and i'm not really thrilled with it. definitely upgrade - you can get emperor 400's on amazon.com for under $55 with shipping, and good canisters fof big discounts. check there first.

I would def suggest more filtration. Overcrowding works, but you have to have the filtration to handle all the extra waste. I run a Filstar xp3 and an Aquaclear 40 on my mixed african tank.

Hi Charlie.

I don't think you're overstocked at all but you could make your life easier and get yourself a filter upgrade.
