I just noticed today, that on a broken off piece of corkscrew val, there are red spots on the leaf. Not brown or rust, but a scarlet red. What could have caused this. It's a 20 gal with hornwort and a couple of amazon spears and a green and white grass that I can't remember the name of. I have a diy CO2 injector run through an air stone. My lighting consists of ~14 hours/day of a single 20w grow-lux wide spec and a 10 watt compact with what I assume to be a cool white that came with it. I added Flourish ferts at the recommended area/tab about a week ago. The tank has been cycling about a month with 6 serpae tetras and a pleco with a aquaclear 30. The temp is held around 80 deg F.
What could be causing red spots?

I also have some brown spots on the occasional stem but those are disappearing and I've gotten a bunch of fresh green growth on all my plant species.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, no pics. I threw the broken off piece out and then thought about it to post. I hope I'm doing something right. It seems like I wake up and there is new growth that's broken off at night. Might just be my impatience and wanting things to be right right away. I should know better than to expect sudden growth since I'm from a farm and crops don't do it. Not sure what to blame so I'll blame it on a solar flare.:)

Well val can give you sudden growth if the conditions are prime. I've seen fields of it. What kind of fish do you have. Val will give you new growth but will also spread by rhisome(?). Most plecos love to eat plants so that may be the source of your problems. If you keep your pleco well fed (algae wafers), he may leave your plants alone. If not try the Bushynose pleco. Excellent alga eat but won't eat plants
