Hi, I'm new at this and had 2 quick questions about the behavior of my young cichlids. there are 2 of them and there are a little more than an inch and a quarter long if i had to estimate. both are yellow labs. first, when i feed them, they never come to the surface for food, they always wait for it to sink down to them. is this alright? and 2nd, one of the two spends almost all of its time in the back bottom corner of the tank, partially behind the hose coming in from the air pump... it seems kind of lethargic to me but then i'm not familiar with what would be their 'normal' behavior. Anyway, any information would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

What are your water parameters, ph, hardness and what kind of decorations do you have in the tank?

pH around 8.3, temp around 79 F, decorations are rocks made into some caves and also some artificial plants.... the tank has been running for about 2 weeks and i am trying to keep up water changes every 5 days or so until more bacteria have grown.. i do have a large piece of slate and a handfull of gravel in there from a tank that had been set up for years. those things have been in there since the tank was set up. the fish have only been in there for 4 days

Your tank is most likely not cycled yet. :(Check the water's chemistry:

ammonia and nitrites should be zeros, nitrates less than 20 ppm.

As a precautious, I would do 50% water change every three days and add some Cycle (can be bought from any fish store). :)

The yellows always come up to the surface for food and even beg for it. Theya re also very active. :)

don't worry thats perfectly normal for now thy are probly just getting adjusted to the tank if it goes on for a couple more days then you should start to worry but for now try frozen foods and veggies maybe some duck weed
