I'm posting this because my Brochis splendens trio decided (all by theirselves) to breed in my 2' quarantine tank (I'd bought 3 with the intention of buying another 3 later- I didn't think quarantining 6 Brochis in a 2'X1'X1' tank at once was a good idea). Now I'm going to be overrun with small Brochis if the fry survive!
I've always fancied breeding cories before, but was intending to start with peppereds or bronzes- one of the easier species to spawn; most information suggests that Brochis are more difficult to induce to spawn so I'd never even considered spawning these. I've also always wanted to breed bristlenoses, but my trio will have to get a sight bigger before they mature.
I was wondering what catfish other forum users have bred and raised?
For the record, my adult Brochis were 2.25-2.75" long (probably wild caught), fed a mixture of flake and frozen bloodworm, and kept at 24 deg. C, pH 7.5, c. 20ppm nitrate (possibly slightly less), and kept with the 3 baby bristlenose. They spawned on the night of the 12th or 13th day in QT, after rushing about like mad things for most of their time in QT. Of about 70-80 eggs laid, 30+ eggs hatched in 3-5 days; the young have been fed on baby brine shrimp, liquifry 1 and 2 to start with, and latterly liquifry 3 and crushed flake, microworms and baby brine shrimp. 3 weeks after hatching the young are up to 17-18mm long- there appear to be about 24 fry still surviving, though the smallest are only half the size of the biggest. They look amazing with a huge doral fin, which they periodically flick up and down when at rest, presumably as a signal to their siblings. Unfortunately I've lost my digital camera since moving house a few months ago- can't even find a USB cable for the mobile phone...
