View Full Version : ludwigia repens lost most of its red coloring
when first purchased this plant had really deep red.over the course of a month most of the red is gone .any special requirements for this plant.i dose pmdd have 2.75 watt per gal in this 29 gallon tank.
Repens needs bright light and low nitrates to get that really red color. Drives me crazy because without the nitrates my other plants don't grow as well so I try to balance the two an never really get that deep red I want.

Really? I didn't know that. I got some L. repens a few months ago, and it's growing really well, but the leaves are a paler red than when I got them (of course!). My nitrates were nonexistent until about a month ago, when I started dosing. I don't really see a difference. Even now, my nitrates don't really go above 10 ppm.
What did you mean by "low"?

L repens is fairly color variable but not like some of the other plants. It can handle less NO3 or more than say L arcuata. It "greens" at 7-10ppm or so. Reds at less than 5.
Light plays a fair predominat role with L repens, more so than some of the other plants but it doesn't take that much, 2w/gal is enough to redden most plants good. The rest is nutrients.
