Ok so I just went to petsmart, and I could not resist the charm of one the female bettas even my g/f who doesn't like fish wanted her. I'm posting here cause I never had a betta before, and was wondering if i have to do anything special to acclimate her. And thhe other question is do you think she will be ok in a 20 long with a group of 8 neons. One lfs by me has a betta in almost every tank but petsmart tried telling me they shouldnt be in a tank with anything smaller then them....

She will LOVE her 20g long!!! Not sure about the tetras but I'll see if I can find anything that says yes or no, and come back and let you know.

i think that she'd be fine. i have a male betta in with a bunch of tetras (See signature) in a 20g and hes fine!

I think it depends on the size of the neons. I know bettas will eat smaller fish ( like most every fish), not sure how much smaller they have to be for the betta to eat them.

I put some neons in with my betta and they picked on him. Nipped his fins and just generally annoyed him. Took them back and got some minnows and they have all lived happily ever after. :o)

The betta will not likely cause a problem with anything else except another betta. I have kept them many times over the years and the only real compatibility problem is when some aggressive tetra or barb is harassing the betta. A group of female bettas is usually fine together unless someone sells you a juvenile male as a female. Male bettas can also be kept with most other fish without a problem from the betta. They do eat fry as do most tropicals. They cannot be kept with other bettas. For male bettas, they can only be with another betta when they are breeding and then it would be best to keep a close eye on them.

I put a female betta into my 29g which has many platy fry (smaller than neons) and she's not bothered any of them. Her and my angel fish had a little scuffle resulting in a torn tail fin, but they are getting along quite well now and I've not seen any signs of aggression from either of them.
