I got my jd and 4 firemouths today, it took all day to find a jd around here none of my lfs stock them.
My jd is about 2 1/2" and my firemouths are about 1 1/2".

Did your LFS tell you that was a dempsey or was it just labled on the tank the african was in?

The weekend staff told me it was a jd but he was in a mixed tank with 4 other types of cichlids.
The tank had all their names on but i cant rememer what they were.

if jack dempseys are hard to find at your local fish stores, then i suggest ordering one from online, there are a few reputible online companies you can order from. Here's a site i will promise you will treat you right http://www.wildcichlids.net/cichlids_stocklist.html they have some Jack Dempsey Males for $5 plus shipping, this is the site I got my Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, few regular Jack Dempseys, and my Yellow Convicts from.

I've spoken with my lfs and they will take my wrong fish back and swap it. They say they have a jd there but he's only 1" and completely black. I'll have to compare with the pic above, if i'm not sure about him i'll try ordering on line as suggested.
Thanks for all info on this suspect fish.

A lot of juvenile Jack Dempseys are dark in color(black) however you should be able to notice the blue/greenish specs on them even when they are dark.
