I went to teh tropical aquarium store today and fell in love with some scats. THey were in a tank with puffers so i assumed they were brackish. The owner told me that i coul dkeep them in freshwater pretty easily as long as i was meticulous with my water since they prone to problems. As I am already meticulous enough, has anyone else heard of Scats in a freshwater setup?

I'm guessing your refering to scats as in Scatophagus argus. They are a true brackish fish so they can live in full fresh, full salt and anywhere in between. When they're small they can be kept in full fresh but as they get older they should be kept in a brackish aquarium.

Scats are brackish fish and will not survive longterm in a freshwater setup. When they get older, they will need a full saltwater setup.

Generally speaking, scats will tolerate fresh when they're young, but will need brackish and then saltwater as they grow.

I've heard that the Banded Scat (tetracanthus) can live in freshwater, I haven't any experience with that though.
