Ummm...I wouldn't jump the gun and start dumping chemicals in there.
Pics would help quite a bit. First, you need to identify what sort of infection you are working with (Parasitic, Bacterial - Gram negative/Gram positive, etc.)

Using Pimafix or Melafix isnt jumping the gun, it's a proven medication that helps fish by killing parasites that are visible or not. I dose my tanks once a month with them for no reason, its a preventative treatment for anything that may be in my tanks thats not visible. But yes pics would help in the identifacation(sp) of what could be wrong with your fish.
I have yet to lose any of my fish from using pimafix or melafix, not even my fry are effected by the medications. All of my fish are currently healthy and active.
