I am picking up some ghost shrimp in the next few days, and wanted to know if I should worry about them being sucked into the filter.......... I guess this depends on the size of them.......... but what can I use to cover the filter intake that will not affect the performance of the filter?

Also, what are some good things to feed the shrimp? habitat? etc etc.......... I have never had shrimp before, and want to make sure they are happy and healthy. They are going in a 10G with 7 glowlight tetras, 2 caves and a few fake plants.

Thanks.

The adults can swim well enough to avoid the intake. However, if they produce young they could be sucked up. There many different things that you can cover the intake with. If you're worried about decreasing the filter's performance, try putting an empty media bag over it. Some have used boiled pantyhose too.

Shrimp eat algae and just about every fish food out there. Shrimp love things like, java moss and natural sea sponges. They do need places to hide, when they molt, and feel stressed. Small lengths of narrow PVC pipe works well, also loosely stacked rocks and dense fake plants work great.

Shrimp are more sensitive to ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and metals (copper, iron, etc...) so avoid using fish medications and fertilizers. For more shrimp keeping information try www.petshrimp.com and read the articles.
