if i wanted to run a saltwater setup with only a HOB for filtration?
I have 5, 10, and 20 gal long tanks, and a bunch of 10-20gal HOB filters (whispers mostly). Is it possible to have a saltwater setup at all? Should i use something other than the filter media provided?
Ideally, i would want to try it out on a 10 gallon tank. I have no particular fish in mind that i plan on keeping. Maybe a damsel fish to help cycle. Probably will not have coral until i can sustain a fish and live rock setup.
Let me know if this is something I can pursue, and if so, what do i need besides marine salt and live sand substrate.

I'd recommend getting a skimmer if only one filter is to be used. It'll go a long way in keeping the water cleaner than just one HOB filter.
Make sure you have plenty of water circulation via powerheads, as well.

You could go the route of a 10gal saltwater setup... I would recomend bare bottom, as it will be easier to maintain with a tank that small... Just get some nice LR....

You just need like a huge aquaclear, like the biggest one they make... take out all the filter media and put LR rubble in it and some chaeto... This will provide all the filtration and circulation you need...

Honestly, at that point you'd be better served to go online and get a HOB fuge, since it would probably end up costing about the same (maybe less if you get one used) and be made to serve as such...

Damsel in any tank, and especially in a small tank, will get extremely aggressive, and you won't be able to put anything else in there.

Plus, in the sticky there are some great fishless ways to effectively cycle your tank which I think you might want to consider. I won't be a big animal rights person here, but there are just so many reasons to go fishless cycle, including the fact that damsels will give you hell if you want to take them out later.
