I've found a lot of good information on these forums and, had some more questions. I currently have an empty 29gallon tank (30lx12wx18.5h) and was looking at getting cichlids for it. I know I don't want jack dempsey, but Pseudotropheus socolofi and Melanochromis cyaneorhabdo, have caught my eye. Would any of one of these be better then the other or can they be kept together or any other suggestions? I've had fish most my life, mostly just community tanks and wanted something different. Next is substrate, gravel or sand? Is one better then the other? I'm sure I'll have a few more questions later on but this will get me started.:)

Pseudotropheus socolofi is a great beginner cichlid. Best to keep in a ratio of 1m:4-5 females if a species tank.
I don't really know anything about Melanochromis cyaneorhabdo...sorry!
Most people prefer sand for african cichlids, well at least I do! :D
Also remember lots of rockwork!

You could easily do a small school of yellow labs and an acei or two.

Thanks for all the info. As for the rockwork, I was looking at the diy projects that someone posted in another thread and was thinking about doing something like that. As for the caves, is there a certain place/height for them, ex. like down towards the bottom or middle?

How about a firemouth.

As for caves, think rockpile. Stack rocks so there is space between them at sand level. You want caves for about 0-8" from the bottom. The fish will excavate from there to make what he wants. Just don't make a brick wall. Give him room and choice in size. Variety is the spice of life.
