Livebearers can tolerate salt and some even seem to thrive in it but I am not one of those who just throw in salt for no reason.

Tetras and goldfish are *not* livebearers however. You also have mixed tropical fish with coldwater fish, haven't you?

How are the ammonia and nitrite levels coming along?

Well that i dont know , and i wont until tomm either ,tomm is payday and i will buy a nice test kit .... but the last time I had it checked which was on tuesday at the Lfs they said that they could tell i just got over my ammonia spike and was almost done with the cycle so all ive been doing is watching for signs from the fish that theres somthin wrong. I did a little water change on thurs just in case the nitrates are too high but i wont know for sure until tomm

I would hold off on the salt and save it in case you need to use it for medication. Raised temp and some salt seem to be a good first remedy for many fish illnesses. Tetras don't need to have it added, just good quality water will do.

i just got back from the Lps and got a test kit ... well there is no ammonia and no cholorine but there nitrate leval is almost all the way down ... but its not tooo high or anything so i guess that means my tank is almost cycled ? rigiht now what should i do every so often to keep it this way ? thanx

Need to know if the nitrite is zero to say if the tank is cycled.
