I met a guy at my LFS and he invited me round to see his fish.
He had a nice setup with 4 tanks and a good few fish, all commmunity setups, but the thing that amazed me was he had names for all his fish, from finbar the rts to packy the placo,
he could account for all his 117 fish and name them from memory,
i'm curious to know if any one else practises this or is the guy a one off.
Cheers.

lol, I do name my fish. But all my goldfish are named Nikita and they all had numbers but I don't know which ones are which except for two. My zebra danios all have names: Alex (guy & girl) Ariel (guy & girl) and Dawn/Don (guy & girl) so I can remember in what order I got them paired and the last girl is Africa because it made me laugh when I saw it in the baby names book. But I'm insane, so don't ask :)

I only have names for my cichlids and my crawfish. Cichlids tend to live much longer than most other fish (mostly due to the larger nature of their size), but also they have some very unique personalities that helps to distinguish them from one another. It becomes easy to know which fish is which when they act differently! My Blackbelt also has a possible lifespan of 15+ years, so you GOTTA name a pet you will have THAT LONG! I do have a total of 4 tanks setup with at least 24 fish, but only 3 of them have names (2 cichlids and my crawfish). Crawfish only has a name because he did this thing with his left claw and occasionally his smaller pinchers on the left side. He would wave them back and forth while the rest of his body remained motionless. I later found out this is in an attempt to "lure" fish over to be victemized! Anyways, I just had to name this guy "Lefty".;)

I had a name for the fancy goldfish, but came so close to losing him that I don't think of his as named any longer, now he's just that poor deformed fish that can't see food right in front of his face. ( a beautiful Butterfly Panda Demekin)

All of my fish are named from my catfish to my oscars.
Ok lets see here's the list:

Big en-4in oscar
Lil en-3in oscar (sibling with the one above)
Mud-madtom catfish
Aoi-8in common goldfish
Ginga-7in comet goldfish
Snowball-3in fantail
Butterfly-3in shubunkin
Pyrite-3in shubunkin
Big boi-5in channel cat
Lil boi-3in channel cat
Top minner-5in wierd unknown minnow

I have about 4 other goldfish that need names. But other than that and 7minnows floating and darting around all my fish have names.

I named my Green Terror Killer, although maybe I should change it to bruiser or something, he hasnt killed anything yet but he sure is an instigator.

I have only named 2 of my fish. I like to wait until a name jumps out at me, and so far that's only happened twice. Out of my 4 Buenos Aires Tetras, I've named the smallest one Jose and the only female is "Mama fish". My daughter has asked to help name the rest (which also includes 3 rasboras and 3 otos), but she hasn't come up with anything she likes enough.

One of my co-workers not only named his fish, he actually had a fish naming party that involved quite a few drinks...Not sure how he remembers all the names, as some were very creative and long. The only one I can recall is Ilene--a cichlid with one eye missing. The fish compensates be canting to the left while swimming, hence, I-lean...Sigh.

W'e named a few of the saltwater fish, but I don't think I've named any FW fish. For the SW: Old Blue--blue damsel, now about 5 year old. Medici: Scooter blenny, PJ: mandarin goby. Pablo: Picasso Trigger. Leo: Lion Fish. The octopusses were Loki and Leera. We also have one hermit crab in the reef who has been dubbed Ol' Yeller ever since he moved into a yellow FW snail shell.

I only name the ones that deserve it. Mad Dog is a betta living in a community tank, Cruiser is a red-tailed shark and Spike, a 3 year old Algae eater to name a few. I have roughly two hundred fish, and another hundred or so fry at any given time so I try not to name them all, just the rowdiest or ill-behaved ones. Oh, and I can't forget Oedipus and Jocasta the Gold Angel pair (who are aptly named for their breeding behavior)

Kobe - Gold Severum
Pasqalina - Brazilian Ram
Heckle & Jeckyl - Bala Sharks
Clyde - Clown Loach
Rosey, Minty & Frank - Painted Tetras
Thing 1 and Thing 2 - Bronze cories
Bart - the last Cherry Barb
Doc - The Last of the Dainos

Hey, new here.
I've an 8" irrie my husband named Noah, he's built like an ark. Could probably house most of my fish too if he wanted to.:D I had been speaking of him looking more like a whale than a catfish. He still has his beautiful colors with his large gently swishing tail that my clown loach likes to get behind so it can get knocked aroung and play in the currents the irrie creates. It's funny. Maybe I should call the clown Jonah, you know, Jonah & the "whale"! The irrie even has a spot on top of his head, his soft spot, that's a pale color & is where a blow hole would be. Noah is hand fed by the way & likes to suck my thumb. :)

I had a Neon named sushi for quite some time when I was younger. He was "the neon that refused to give up" despite a pretty nasty attack of fungus early on. He got over it, but had a bit of a "limp" from then on.

My Rosy Barb is named Pepe'. Don't ask.

Haven't named any of the others. Dunno why.

Paddington and Podmeister the Peruvian Puffers :)

ok so they're SA puffers but peruvian sounds better.

Oh, and (prize for the most unoriginal name anyone?) Al, the albino cory.

And (Cory) Feldman.

Sad isn't it.

Male betta: Sparky

Male Krib: George
Female Krib: Martha

Flying Fox: Frank

I have lots of other fish (school of danios, school of lemon tetras, cories, ottos, and others) but no names for them.

2 angels: Stars and Stripes
male platy: Willy
2 female platies: Nilly and Tilly

We have named only a few of our fish:

Mr. Big the pearl gourami (he was the biggest fish in the tank at the time, but not anymore ;) )

Leo the pleco (I have no idea where that name came from....)

Red a male betta (gee can you guess the kids named him?)

Spunk another male betta (another one of the kids fish...)

The rest I just call Guys or piggies if it's feeding time :D

Out of about 135+ fish, only 1/3 of mine are named.

Most are either names I really like or they are based on personality quirks or other weird things.

I just named my pink tilapia Cecil. C.C. for short because he/she is pink like cotton candy AND if any of you remember C.C. from the 80's band Poison, he wore that color of pink lipstick.

Hi Mickey,
Thanks for the welcome. I know you guys give some good advice, I've been reading on this forum since last summer! Finally decided to "open my mouth":) Pardon the pun, but I've "searched world wide web" & found this to be the place I enjoy the most & have learnt the most from. Like everyone else, me & my fishies have been through some tough times, but we made it. All are doing well, thanks to all of you. Like you guys say, search back & read, alot of the answers are already there. Somewhere, someone has already had any problem I am or might face in time to come. I research & read books too, but there is nothing like the good ole "been there, done that" experiences. Momma always said, "keep, quiet & just watch & listen, I might learn something." Always works!

My fish & I say thank you.
Cheers,
Valerie

Yeah, what Mickey said. I don't post much but I enjoy the site, especially the forum. I've been helped. (Still don't know what caused this, though* -- see this thread (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=11617) , which includes this photo (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/attachment.php?postid=91737).)

Some of our fish have names. The Mickey Mouse platies were Butch & Sundance, but we came home from vacation on Sunday to find half of Butch had been eaten. (Didn't even know he was sick.) Our peppered corydoras have names but I can't remember them right now. I wanted to name one of our clown loaches Ho Chi Minh (because we call them, "heeere, loachy, loachy, loachy" -- sounds like "Ho Chi") then naturally we'd have to call the other one Pol Pot. But my baby, she didn't think that was funny, so the clown loaches are still nameless.

In college I had guppies; two were named named Louis & Clark. A guy in the dorm named a pigeon who visited frequently Walter. :)

Edit
* Just re-read that thread. OrionGirl had some good input, thanks, Orion. And thanks, kveeti, for complementing the camera. Nikon Coolpix 880 digital. Worth every freakin' penny.

1 betta Rupert Giles
1 queen arabesque pleco Queenie
1 Angelfish Wheezy

:) Of course I name my fish, they keep me company. But I can't tell the difference between my neons, so they are all called Squad A. And my ruddy nosed tetras are called Squad B. In addition to that, they all have secret names, like Alexandra, Kurt and Christian (the last one after my boss:D ), but it's no good using them, as I can't tell the difference between the individuals.
I saw a similar post earlier, so I think that question is redundant, but I just wanted to tell you about my naming practice.

Goldfish - Goldie
Betta - Patriot (previous one: Mo' Betta)
Albino Cory - Virginia (her male counterpart was Albee, who apparently never had a significant female in his life)
Julii Cory - Julie
Ambiacus Cory - Amber, but since she's a he, I think Polyphemus is appropo for a cyclopic cory...
Otto - Methuselah

I had names for all my bettas when I was younger. I had Wally (my first and most beloved betta), then Red and Angel and Temagami :) The many goldfish that followed had a variety of names from Alex to Dolly and just plain Comet.

I'm down to only four fish now, 3 neons (just referred to as the neons) and my kissing gourami that I've had for years. He's not perfect but I love him nonetheless. He's fondly referred to as Pinky :D

Well now I have 10 adults z.danios, and well over 170 baby z. danios and they all no longer have names. I think I'm going to have to get some unique fish and stop breeding identical fish! Not to mention my memory is bad enough as it is!

I've named a few - its true that you get more attached to them if you name them which makes it harder if they go to the big aquarium in the sky. My common pleco is Pleco Bill, but when my dad took care of my tanks while I was on holiday, he asked me what that Darth Vader fish was. Apparently, Pleco Bill came out to greet him with his dorsal fin up - very impressive fish.

I don't name all my fish but some of them are named. I tend to name them when I think of something I really like. Currently my horse-faced loach is named "Seabiscuit" and one pair of my breeding convicts are named "John and Lavinia Fisher" after a pair of serial killers who were put in jail in Charleston, SC (executed in 1820). I am still trying to think of a pair of convicts for the other convicts (everyone suggests Bonnie and Clyde but I don't think they were taken alive and thus never served time in prison). Our bristlenose pleco is named "Gandalf".

Then there are my skunk corydoras which my 6 year old daughter named. She named 2 of them "Stinky", 2 of them "Flower", and the littlest one "Nemo". One of the fish she named "Flower" (after the skunk of Bambi fame) she reports to be Nemo's mom, and she decided one of the remaining larger corys is Nemo's dad so she named him "Plant". The final cory is sadly nameless. But he has a pretty good chance of being named 5/6ths of the time as only the small one is easy to tell apart from the others.

She also named our blue betta "Blueberry".

I had names for my clown loaches..
Alberto, Alfonso, Arabella and Ich (guess where that one came from)
No idea why the italian sounding 'a's came from. But only Alfonso is left (sigh).
Now trying to think up a good name for a pair of soon to be incoming Kribs. Guess I won't know till I meet them.
Guppies get called various names - but most of the boys are Casanovas (again - guess why!)
My plecs get called grumpy and my Amanos get called 'awwwww cute'!!!

My my aren't we all sad!!!

PS I once had a pair of hamsters called 'short' and 'curly' which was about as creative as I ever got on naming. It amused their vet no end!

"Jack" the one-eyed goldfish was originally named Redbeard, but my husband said it was too long and suggested Jack, as in One-Eyed Jack.

"Holly" is a red and white comet goldfish that sort of looks like a Red Cap Oranda, I got her around Christmas time and my friend suggested a Christmasy name.

"Felix" was named by my friend in Michigan, dunno why she said his name should be Felix. He's The Amazing Kaleidoscope Goldfish! He started out silver, then turned a pretty coppery brown color, then got a black streak down his back and on his mouth and tail. Now the streak is gone and he's a light orange color. This is a fish that someone told me would turn white. I guess he's going through every other color first.

"Bob" is my Betta. I was taking him home after work the night I got him and had to stop at Wal-Mart on the way. I set him on my dash and the words, "You stay put, Bob." came out. It has stuck ever since.

"Otie" the otocinclus was named for...well, you can guess! Real original, I know!

"Cocktail" the ghost shrimp...yeah, silly, I know. I couldn't use "Scampi" since he died and I don't recycle pet names.

I don't know why I haven't named my White Clouds, probably because I can't really tell them apart.
