I posted some of this info tagging onto someone else's thread, but it got a bit lost there. As the subject says, I'm converting an in ground gunite/cement, 16' x 36', 3' shallow, 9' deep pool to a pond. It has a bottom drain and surface skimmer at deep end which circulates back into the pump house 4' from the pool's edge. All plumbing is underground - under aggregate. We won't be doing any structural modifications.
The pump house holds a Hayward Super II 1 1/2 HP pump on a timer and a 60 square foot diatomaceous earth filter - it's an American Prod. Titan CM Vertical Grid DE. Looks like it's running through 1 1/2" pvc. We're also going to add a waterfall to the shallow end and include bio media. Will be lightly stocking and adding much beneficial and ornamental plant life.
From the information I've gathered, advice input and searching, it all looks very promising including using the current filter.
My question is mostly about the current filter. It's DE with vertical grids - I don't know what the grid material is made of, but the DE would be good as bio media - and I don't see why this filter wouldn't be perfectly good using the same type of media.
Also, the heater in the pump house is old and will be pitched and something else can be plumbed into that if necessary - perhaps a nice little DIY sand filter. Anyone have some good DIY plans for a simple sand filter? :)
Also, does anyone have any thoughts about the pump running say half the time through the filter or is that just begging for trouble? Does it make it more feasible if there are other factors at work when the pump is off? If I've got an aerator/boilermaker type thing going in conjunction with the waterfall (which will be plumbed as a separate unit with a separate pump, I believe) and the filters running through the pump, could the pump run 2 on/2 off? (Or 12 on/12off.) Yes, it's a money saving thought. :)
Thoughts, ideas? Thanks!
Debbie
