i posted this same question in the plant forum but no one answered so i figured someone would help me here..i hope...i would like to start a planted tank. as of right now i just have artificial plants and gravel and i would like my tank to look more realistic and natural. how do i start?? i just have gravel, no kind of special substrate for plants and i'm not willing to change the substrate as i only have enough time to do weekly maintenance on it. i also just have low light and my canopy and tank is old and lights that length cannot be found anymore. i have 3 extra lights that have not been used so those will last me for quite sometime. will i be able to plant the plants right into the gravel and will they survive? i'm willing to use ferts. to help the plants thrive. if someone could give me all the info. i need that would be helpful..thanks! tell me everything i need to know!

p.s. - its the 50g. that i'm wanting to plant if that helps at all?

I have a 55 gallon planted tank with a gravel substrate and my plants seem to grow quite well. I also have only about 2 watts per gallon of light, so it is not exactly a high light tank. I do not add any CO2 at this time, tho that may change in the near future. You can grow plants very nicely in a gravel substrate and fairly low light. You just have to choose the right plants. I have lots of Java fern, various crypts, a red Tiger Lotus that has multiplied into 4 or 5 bulbs, an anubias, a couple swords and some Java moss that is starting to take hold on one of the driftwood pieces. For ferts, I use plant tabs once every month or 6 weeks for the swords, and Seachem's Flourish Plant Supplement and Trace Supplement once a week.

This is the tank:
