View Full Version : malaysian fern?
I just bought plant from my LFS that I have not seen before. They call it "Malaysian Fern". It has a single long stem (12 - 15 inches) that is about 1/8 inch in diameter with several fronds at the end. It has a very hard texture and some roots a the lower end of the stem. Sound familar? Anybody know what this is? Do I put the roots in the substrate, tie it to wood or what? How about light requirements?
Thanks

Search on african fern--sounds similar. If so, you don't want to plant it, just attach it to a rock or wood, like you would anubias. They don't do well planted--they tend to wither away. The plant should attach quickly, and mine has gorwn huge--was 2-3 stems with a 3-4 inch base, and it is now a veritable shrub. I have about 2 watts/gallon, don't fertilize, and only have DIY CO2, so it's a hardy plant.
No, it's not African fern (bolbitis). I have that and this is very different. A single stem with mutiple fronds, no rhizome structure. The roots come directly out of the stem. Thanks

There is a terrestrial plant called a malaysian fern... http://www.uog.edu/cals/site/POG/daval.html has a decent pic.
Hmmm, maybe. I'll take a close look at the plant tonight when I get home and compare it to the picture. The one thing in the discription on the web site that is questionable is the reference to the thick rhizome. Of course, the rhizome could just be missing from the sample I have. If this is it and it's terrestrial, it's too bad, because this is a very attractive plant. It wouldn't suprise me though, this LFS has sold bog plants as aquatics before. Oh well, $10.00 gone. Thanks very much for your input.
Orion Girl,
Took a close look at the plant compared to your picture, and I think you found it. Bummer! It's a nice looking plant. Oh well....
