I'm afraid my beloved 8 inch pleco is going to die. He has what appears to be fin rot.

I pulled him out of our main tank and put him a hospital tank for the past three days. I was treating him with Maracyn. He has not eaten in over a week. I change 50% off his water each morning and add a new dose of meds. This afternoon I noticed that the hospital tank looked cloudy. When I checked the levels they were at ammo 0, nitrates 0, Ph 7.2, and nitrites at 2 or higher! I changed the water again and the nitrites dropped to .25 but at 9:45 they were back up to 2 or 3.

I figure that I fryed my bio media with the antibiotics. Is this correct. I moved him back into the main tank for now.

What can I treat him with? I can run to the store first thing in the AM.

He is one of our favorites and I'm really worried about him 8(

Thanks for any help you have to offer I really need it. Michelle

yes, the antibiotics will have killed off the bio media, thats a big problem with antibiotics and also the reason i choose not to use them. i'm currently dealing with my bronze corys having fungus and fin rot and my red eyed tetras having just fungus. i'm using a product by SeaChem called Paraguard and i love it! I know the name has "para" in it but its good for parasites, fungus, bacteria or whatever the problem is. It seems to be working so far for me and it doesn't kill the bio media either. I just do water changes and then add the paraguard in. They're not even in a qt tank (don't have one) and the other fish are all fine. I'd recommend this product and most LFS has it as it is very popular! Heres a link for it...

I'm going to run out and get it this morning. Thanks so much!

yeah no problem, it may not work right away, but i think it would help more then not having any treatment in there at all if you know what i mean. you may need to purchase more then one bottle, i know that i'm gonna have to get another one or maybe even 2 because i'm treating 2 tanks and going through it quickly too i might add!
