packing filstar xp2 for planted aquarium

i was just wondering what everyone packs in their cannisters.anything special in a heavy planted environment?i read charcoal removes trace elements.also whats the best way to feed diy co2 into the xp2?

I mainly use that cotton filter floss. I do have some peat in my canisters as the Discus seem to like it. No charcoal.. There's also the sponges and bio-balls.
