Here is a thought, I have an old Aquarium Pharmacuticals DI filter. It didn't do much more than my household RO system so I quit using it. To save on the expensive RO water (filter replacement) and the need to mix it with tap water to bring up KH and PH I want to convert the old AP DI filter to a tap water filter. I was thinking of packing it with filter fiber, activated charcol and peat to lower the KH a bit before adding it to my tank. Will the peat lower a tap water KH of about 130 enough to justify using it in this homeade filter?

Simply filtering the water through peat once will not lower your kh very much. If you pump it through continuously overnight or something, you can lower your kh down to 70 but you'll end up with slightly golden colored water.
good luck

That was kind of my thinking, any suggestions for lowering PH before you put it in your tank?
