Hmm.. So I just stuffed bunch stuff into the filter. The sponge, Activated Carbon, Ammonia Remover, Filter Cotton, and cuttlebone!
Very cool, may it provide many years of faithful service. I am using an AC110 and AC50's. I like them, they seem pretty rugged and reliable. The nice thing is you can just rinse out the sponge and reuse it.
Rock on!

I got my aquaclears yesterday. It was actually $25.49 for an Aquaclear 70. I got 2 of them, and got free shipping.
Though, the 50 is already quite turbulent for a 10g shrimp tank, the 70 wouldn't be suitable for you even if was only $0.49 more.

I love my AC but for some reason sometimes I have to stick a chopstick into the thing to get the impeller to get going.

No need to use the Ammonia remover in a cycled tank. Just a waste of cash. Your Bene Bacteria will convert it for you. :)

I know. Its ok since it came with the Filter. I might as well use the Ammonia remover. I know its turbulent, but I have a way over that. Actually I'm not sure if it will work. I tested it before I put the shrimp into it and its pretty darn strong.

It came with ammonia remover? I thought it was just the sponge, carbon and biomax.Nice prices on the AquaClears though, they're usually pretty expensive.

Ditto. It happens whenever my power goes out, the filter does not re-prime itself when the power comes back on.

It's probably biomax, look on the box labeling if you're unsure.
Biomax is biological media.

How do you know when to replace the Biomax media??

biomax isnt really useful for very long. it gets clogged up easily. many people here run ac's with just filter floss and the sponge. anybody know why the ac's are so cheap on petsmarts website right now? i did a pricematch on a ac 50 and got it for 20 bucks in store. im thinking about getting an ac 110 because its only 36 bucks online vs i believe 90 in the store
If I recall Hagen says to replace the Biomax every 3 months. It will eventually become too 'loaded' or clogged with bacteria by that time. At least the sponge is still reusable though!
