So although I have yet to decide what exactly will go in the 9 yo's 10 gallon tank ( danio's to cycle, betta, have been considered) I thought it might be cool to put in a crab or shrimp or something ( what 9 yo doesn't find it cool? ) He is also big on the though of having a frog in there ( I know, its not an Invert but thought I would mention it)
However, as little as I know about fish, other than the goldies & Koi in muy pond, I know even less when it comes to this.
Could someone giv eme some suggestions of what could be considered? Keeping in mind fish have yet to be decided and it is in a 9 yo's room so hoping for something somewhat low maintenance

no, not 9 yo yo's. I meant in a 9 year old's room ie as much as I woniter ond oversee everything, I don't want something that every moment he/i need to worry about water param's etc

ghost shrimp are pretty interesting. cherry shrimp are like ghost shrimp, but they are red.

the fiddler crabs that you will find in the stores are brackish, and need a bit of land to come out of the water on.

a fishless cycle would probably be better.

BTW, danios and bettas may eat shrimp

thanks, but it's not the fish I was looking for, it was suggestions for possibl crawly things I could put in his tank. I have heard umpteen different kinds of shrimp, but know nothing about any of them. Also considering frogs . He saw some in a lfs and thought it was cool, but don't know any types or what they require either. I had been thinking perhaps crabs, but have been told they are brackish

Um.. was that supposed to perhaps say full of useful information?

I will look into the frogs, I think they would be cool. Have to look into apple snails too as I have heard them come up often. When I think snails, I think of the many many....many in my pond but perhaps I should do some research.

Why do you suggest a fishless cycle jm1212? I have thought about it, but frankly feel that it is perhaps more time consuming than I really want, especially since I have our ( mine and g/f) tank to cycle as well and not crazy about testing everyday and on top of that have NO clue where to get ammonia. I shoud get a test kit though. Bought one a few weeks ago when I was curious about the 2 gallon that had been sitting here, but they are test strips and don't even have ammonia reading on them

I think ghost shrimp (more available than cherry shrimp, and plenty interesting) applesnails and frogs are all great ideas for you. If you wanted, you could do all 3 in the 10g, plus a betta (or a few small fish). I've never kept the frogs, but some good resources for shrimps and snails are petshrimp.com and applesnail.net.
