I need help clearing the soft brown algae off the side of my tank.

I have 2 cherry barbs, 1 odesssa barb and a japoinca shrimp.

The shrimp was bought to solve the algae problem. Although it did a great job of removing most of it (esp on the plants and rocks), the shrimp can't get up on to the sides to eat the algae there, so I wonder if I should get a snail?

I know I am slightly overstocking, but I am doing weekly water changes.

Do snails pollute the water more or less or the same as the fish I am keeping?

Any advice will be gratefully received!!

soft brown algea is caused by a build up of nitrates in the tank and too much lighting. turn the light off more often, and how high are your nitrates?
how often do you do water changes?

i would not recommend a snail to help your algae problem. if you like snails and want one for your tank, then go for it. but do not get one just to fix your algea problem.. even if they did clear up your algea, you would have to go buy special algae food for them to eat. its cheaper to just do the proper water maintenance that you have to do anyway.

My Nitrates are a zero - or at least I think so - will do another test later!
I do weekly 30 - 50% changes.
I don't have any lighting and only small amount of natural light, no direct sun.

Cheers
