Yes, they should, if you do have tanks from home, go ahead and use the gravel from those tanks for starter bacteria. But instead of doing a fish bowl, i would try one of the 2.5 mini bows or a starfish from Walmart. These are small tanks with filters. The starfish has no lights but are still nice. The mini bow has an incadescent light in it but you could swap it out for a small screw in power compact. this way you could have some live plants in your tank. But if you decide the bowl, please use old gravel from another tank.

What type of fish are you planning on putting in there? Goldfish are far too big and messy to be kept in a fishbowl. Also, if you do choose to go with the bowl..don't fill it up all the way, if you fill it too around half, there will be more surface area, this should make things a bit easier on the fish. Most importantly, get to know the type of fish you are looking at getting and carefully consider their needs before rushing out and buying them. Not too many types of fish could thrive in a fishbowl. Personally I would go with a male betta if I had to keep something in a fishbowl.

Goldfish don't require filtration?
They are some of the biggest poopers in fishdom!
And "a small goldfish bowl" is a really bad idea- they need room.
