Hi all,
I have my tank setup with african cichlids and just got hold of a whole lot of sandstone from my building site. Now I know how to clean it and have done a vinegar test on several samples and have satisfied my self that the sandstone is safe.

The question is (obviously afetr reading many threads):

I cant find eggcrate at the hardware is it safe to use the typr of foam you put under the tank?
Seeing that my fish are in and that my gravel is also, what do you think the best method for me placing the stone. I want to build part of the stone full height in one corner and then teir off along the length of the tank. I just need to get my methodology right so I dont stress out my africans. Thanks

You can pretty much use anything that is aquarium safe to put the rocks on. The thing that is nice about eggcrate is that it doesn't compress under the weight of the rock and it sinks. Make sure that whatever you use is placed directly on the glass and not on top of the gravel. Just clean the gravel out of the corner you are starting in, put whatever pad you are using down and place some rock on it. Continue doing this until you have all your base rocks in place. Then just stack them up to suit your taste.
