I used to have a nice peacful tank... Suddenly, everyone became aggressive !

I bought a small bag of Algae discs so that I can feed my Chinese Algae Eater... When I drop the disc into the tank, everyone seems get excited and jump on it except the Chinese Algae Eater itself... And everyone start to act aggressiely... The Tin Foil barb, as usual, dominates the tank and chase everyone and it seems that everyone afraid to go and eat from the disc when she is eating... The tetras are getting crazy, they are 4 now (one died before few days RIP)... The tetras are chasing one another aggressivley and try to bite one another...

Now the strange thing is that the sweet, placid, cute Blue Gourami is dominating the tank. She (or he) is really becoming aggressive. She is even bulleying the Tin Foil Barb (which I really was shocked when I saw that).. Not letting anyone eating from the algae disc and whoever comes nearby, she chases it like crazy with an unbelievable speed.. The onlye one that she leaves alons is the other Gourami (The neon dwarf one)...

The CAE is an aggressive one too. Chasing the ones that are similar in size or smaller (but not the Tin Foil Barb nor the Gouramies).

The only one who is placid and (minding his/her own business) is the Neon Dwarf Gourami..

Now the question is:

Whay this all aggression in my tank ?

How can I get the CAE to eat the disc ? No one let her do that.

Thanx in advance...

Try feeding the algae discs at night, thats when I feed them for my pleco and he comes out for them then. Also try adding some veggie matter or spirlina flakes for everyone else, seems like they may be needing it.

I hate to say it, but they are probably getting aggresive because the tank is too small for them. The Tin foil barb and the CAE both get TOO big for a 10G. Arguably, so does the Blue Gourami. The barbs also prefer being in a group. If you really want a peaceful tank, I'd rethink the stocking. Good luck.

Just tell me that you have Buenos Aires tetras, and your tank look likes a bunch of veggie lovers :).

This is really sad.. I love the Tin Foil Barb and the Gourami... The thing is, I can't see them growing.. It seems that thery are still the same size... May be it's just that I get used to them so I can't feel the difference in their size...

How long have you had them? The thing with fish that get fairly large is that they can become stunted in a small environment. The big problem is that this causes internal organ problems long term. I know it's tough to get rid of fish you're attached to, but alot of times it's just truly better for the fish. I had to take quite a few back to the LFS from my first tank. You wouldn't believe how badly overstocked I was when I started!!! I'm just glad I found this site and got the advice I did.

And, don't be embarrased. If you don't know what type of tetra it is, take a pic and post it or describe it as well as you can. Chances are that soeone here can help to identify it. Tetras like larger groups of their same species and Serpae are notoriously "nippy" to begin with. While variety is neat, you can't truly appreciate them until you see them in a nice sized school. That will be hard to achieve in a 10G though.

You're way overstocked for a 10G. Take back the tin foil barb, the SAE and the blue gourami. Maybe add another tetra or 2. That's my advice.

Yeah, a tinfoil barb in a 10 gallon,,,,well, good luck with that. I also have question, or actually a statement. Many of these threads get very annoying to read when people like to copy and paste the entire thread above them. We obviously start at the top when reading, so we all know what they say, there is really no need to copy the entire thing,,,now is there. However, feel free to copy and paste this one to start a new thread, as i'm sure there will be some offended people.

They might get aggressive or annoyed with each other because ..well..they are getting to the teenage years...
When you buy these fishes, you buy babies, and then they grow and get annoyed and start fighting.

Maybe spend some time looking up how big each and every one of the fish you have will grow in adult times, will give you an idea of what the future problems will be (tin foils get HUGE, CAE get huge and might attach themselves to your smaller fish), serpeas are nippy and like a bigger school), the blue gourami will get BIG too.

If you have the space (and the money) why not buy a 55, put all the gravel from the 10 in the 55, put the filter from the 10 on the 55 (with another filter of course) and in doing this you can (a) keep most of your fish and (b) do not have to worry too much about cycling a 55gallon tank!

If that is not an option, you will have to really rethink the stocking, because eventually they will simply and ugly-like kill each other...
