OK, so my Discus spawned again, and again, the eggs turned white. The water is fine, they have been medicated before spawning to ensure that they are in tip top condition, they are DEFINITELY male and female, I have today learned that the breeding tank should have no lights, does anyone know why? Also, someone mentioned that their diet should be varied with quality foods to help the old boy produce his sperm. Anyone else know what I can do to increase the chances of the spawnings being successful? This is their 4th attempt.

just keep trying. It will work sometime unless the male is sterile, which is possible.. but doesnt happen all that likely. It is good advice on the lights off, as this should keep algae and fungus down. KEEP doing WC's after the eggs have been laid. Just smaller percentage ones.

I dont believe it is necessary to treat the adult discus with medication. Some people use antifungus in the tank, but just to help the eggs not the adult fish.

As you said, a varied diet is important, also trying live foods may be able to help.

Good luck, and remember its all about patience. Even if the eggs do hatch, theres no guarantees that the first couple batches of fry are going to be healthy or even survive.

Were did the discus originate from?

many of the asian discus are loaded with steroids to bring out the color..these same fish tend to have issues when trying to reproduce.
otherwise just let them go at it..they will hopefully get better at it.

Just be patient. They should be spawning again every 8 or 9 days. I have a pair spawing in my show tank. Temp 83, ph 7.6, town tap water only treated with NovAqua water conditioner. On spawn four there were about 13 wrigglers out of a spawn of at least 100. He missed most of them and they fungused, but the wigglers hatched, mom and day cleaned off the bad eggs after they hatched. They are on the same diet they've been on.....FBW 2X/day, and 2X/day with a combination of two types of flakes and discus pellets. Once or twice a week dried tubifex. Lights are on normal schedule 12 hours. This pair seems to like to spawn at night in the dark. Once they lay, I keep a light on in the room to help keep the bristlenose plecos away. I have never heard of keeping the lights out! I don't medicate my fish, they don't have internal or external parasites to medicate for, that's just unnecessary meds and stess on them. If they are young, it just takes time Females mature faster than the males so just because she's laying doesn't mean he's old enough to be fertile yet either. I have a second young pair of white pigeons, the male can't wait for the female to spawn so he can eat them!
Are they in their own breeding tank?
