Strange Breeding Habits in my Cichlids

This morning I saw the neatist thing. My holding yellow lab had spit her fry, but when I came close, she picked them all back up into her mouth and swam off. It was really amazing...I thought only South American cichlids had parental instincts.:jaw:

Another odd thing is my German Rams. I was under the impression that German rams laid there eggs on leaves (at least that is what my past ones have done). The ones that I have now, dig holes in the gravel (even with leaves available).:jaw:

Nope, africans do as well. Ask Jack about the huge pair of Red Empress he has that have fry right now. He told me that anytime anyone walks in the room, all the fry run back into the female's mouth and that the male picks up any stragglers.

that's my favorite thing about cichlids, the way they care for their young.

as far as the rams go, they pretty much lay them anywhere they feel like they can stand gruard of. usually its a flat spot on a rock, but they'll make little nests too.. its just a matter of what they feel comfortable with.
