is registering nitrate in the tap water normal? that would explain why the plants didn't seem to notice whether there were fish in the tank if i continued to change water. but isn't that a problem as far as drinking it goes. I am already done growing so I don't think that I need to be fertilized.:D

Low levels of nitrates are fairly common in waters sources. Not appetizing, but not a problem.

Up to 10pm of Nitrates are allowed in drinking water. Here in Columbus the west side of town has 5-10ppm of Nitrates most of the time and the east side of town has none. I live on the west side of town and filter all of my drinking water but at least my plants never want for nitrates.

Alex, what are you using to filter out nitrates?

Some private wells in agribusiness areas have much higher nitrate loads.
