Fuge out of an old hob filter?

I'm entertaining the idea of making a small fuge out of either my aquaclear 300 or a dormant biowheel setup I got. Anyone ever try this? Obviously I wouldn't be able to make a deep sand bed, but I was thinking of doing some LR rubble and macro. I think it'll work.

Anyone have any ideas for a DIY HOB fuge?

What size tank is this for, many people turn there AC'c into miny fuges.

I'm using an overflow box as my fuge. I tried a hob but the water level sits too low for the pump to keep its prime.
