Just wondering if using soft water from a water softener in your home is bad for your tank?

I would not recommend it.
most softeners use salt for the ion exchange. Some softeners can use potassium instead of salt. if you could use potassium in your softener that would be better for you and your fish depending on what fish you are keeping.
