How many of u fellow aquarists have a fish from this family? I saw a 3in specimen at my LFS but i didn't have any money to buy him and plus i wasn't sure if i could support this fish's growth to adulthood. I know this is probably a rare find. I was just wondering how many of ya'll had experience with these fish and what kind of advice u could offer me on keeping one of em.

wow sweet fish thats too bad you couldn't house it.... I dont have one myself but they are sweet looking

polypterus senegalus (senegal bichir) is actually pretty common around here. most petcos have them in stock pretty frequently. i had one for a couple of weeks personally and i cannot stress enuf how much of an escape artist these fish are. if you do get one, keep ALL holes covered. mine escaped thru about 1/2 inch gap and dried out overnight. unfortunately he was too far gone when i found him. another thing you might want to consider if you get one is keeping your water level low. mine escaped after a water change and the water was topped off high.

excellent fish tho overall. fascinating to watch. the pectoral fins seemed like little hands. they are also predatory and will eat small fish, actually mine preferred live food.

good luck.

wow cool.

Ok i gotcha. Do u also know of any sites that i can get specific care info on them and such and the basic profile info, like how big they get....etc?? I saw it and it looked so cool so i've been thinking about getting one. If i have the tank capacity and such. Thanks alot for the replies u guys. :D

Ornate Bichir

I've had mine for 7 years. I'm not sure if a fish can be intelligent, but this one gives me that impression. This is one of those fishes that deserve their own tank. To keep the water quality high, I only feed the fish once every other day. I feed one jumbomin pellet.

As a predator, this fish has style. Quite frankly, I do not find interesting the sight of a big cichlid shooting across the tank to gulp down a minnow or a gold fish. I much prefer the stalking style of my bichir. Or the stealth used by the Leaf Fish. Put shrimp in the tank and bichir starts stalking immediately.

Some of them grow very big. Consider carefully before you buy. I have read that they have very long lifespans. Try to find one of the smaller variety, like the ornate. I believe the Senegals can get too big.

A good set-up would be a predator tank for one of these. Make it a one-fish tank. Put lots of driftwood, keep it dark and foreboding.

Hi, I am new to this site. Hope to learn some new stuff here :)

I think it is relative. Some fish are smarter than others. I'm not sure if fish can learn, but they can be conditioned. There's a difference. Also, fish are imprinted with specific types of behavior - ie - cichlids raising their fry, which some consider to be intelligence.

I agreed with u on that.
