Hi daniel. Swordtails can grow up to 6 inches but are normally smaller. Mine are bout 2 inches at the min an extremely active.
She (girlfriend) really wants the 3 male Swordtails,
I was reading that the female's need to outnumber the male's by 2 to 1 or the male's will pester and herass the female's
so cut down on the corys to 4? and still have 9 swordtails?

Sword tails only get up to 3" to 4"
and cory's about 2"
Cory's stay at the bottom of the tank, and Swordtails middle top.
What would you suggest go with 3 male swordtails in a 38g tank?
