I'm setting up a 55 gallon, and currently just aqua scaping it before I put any fish in it. There is a clump (it use to be all over but somehow has congegated togther) which looks like moss. But I'm not sure because the only plants in there now is:

one banana plant
dwarf hair grass
anacharis
java fern
hornwort

I havn't even started a fish-less cycle, so there has been no ammonia source added. So I'm wondering what I got. It wasn't there when I first introduced the plants, but suddenly started getting it on the hair grass and anarchasis (spelling) and now it's moved together like it's forming a colony on my sand. I notice a little bit on the glass as well, were the clump is. I wasn't sure if it was some moss that I unknowingly got when I purchased my plants or if this is normal, or some algae, but I wasn't sure if you could get algae without fish....... I don't know, any advice is appreciated. It isn't taking over my tank but I just would like to know what it is.

I knew moss grew in wet enviornments but I didn't think it could grow on the bottom of a fish tank. BTW, you can have algae without fish.... all that is required truly is sun and water. I would say it is an algae rather than a moss. You could have picked up some algae when you bought the plants and it is just now starting to grow more rapidly.
