Is algae detrimental?

In my 10 gallon tank, I've got a healthy amount of this fuzzy green algae, not the slime, just normal algae. It's obviously due to the lights because none of it is under the java moss. That's not really the point.
My girlfriend likes it.
Aside from looks, does this kinda algae actually do anything detrimental to the environment?

It will not hurt your fish if that is what you mean. It actually consumes nitrogen compounds and produces O2 just like any green plant.

worst its going to do is kill your plants if it grows over it..... there is always algae in a tank..... the point is control and balance.

As long as it does't cover your plants it won't hurt anything, it can cover the leaves and keep the "host" plant from getting the proper amount of lighting.
