about an hour ago I noticed one of my runts had a gill issue. The problem he is in a tank with 5 other Discus. I am making a quarantine tank now and I need advice.
The symptoms are lateral gill preference and on his left gill (not used or used very little) there is a protrusion from it. It appears to be a small piece of tissue triangular in shape about 1/3 the size of the gill hanging out of it. It is light colored and kind of hanging out of the gill. This fish has been slowly but surely becoming less active over the past few weeks. ANY HINTS?????
I will try to post pics after quarantine.
Tank parameters (NOW) are
Ammonia 0
Nitrite (NO2) 0
Nitrate (NO3) 10
Temp 85 degrees F

it would be easier with a pic, perhaps someone thats better with diseases can chime in
however, if its a parasite, then you'll have to treat all the stock, i wouldn't rule out hexamita

I submitted color and contrasting pics to determine the size of the protrusion. It was not too easy to take good pics.

If it's a bacterial gill issue, Furan II is the med most recommended.

If it was actual gill tissue it would be a deep red color. The gills receive a great volume of blood flow to permit gas exchange.
Based on the color, it is either a deformity that may be blocking the gill tissue a bit resulting in a bit more skittish fish or a parasite. Since there are not many veterinarians who take care of ornamental fish, I would treat the fish and its tankmates for parasites. If this does not work, you will probably lose this fish.

charlie maybe correct.
if it is parasitic you should treat the entire tank.
hard to tell by the picture but you may try looking at gill parasites*(flukes come to mind)
this could also be an abnormality.
infestations also lead to other problems like cysts etc.
along with bacterial infections.

This didn't look like flukes to me but on the other hand I have no idea what it is. I know this it started today (my wife confirms this) and my fish is getting more lethargic.
On the other hand I was banned at SimplyDiscus.com for posting this same thread. Why would that happen????

RedScare - apparently there was a problem with the pictures you posted on Simply, if they were clicked twice it went to another site XXX rated? Al (Brewmaster) posted that he sent you a PM. Wish I could offer you more help with your discus, but I'm not familiar with what is happening to him.

AAhhhh I can see why I would be banned. I did not post a link to a porn site. I assure you and Al. I do not understand why that happened. I used Image Shack hosting for my pictures and it was out of my hands from there.
