I live in a very small room (college...) and I don't have much room for my tank. Right now it is sitting on a sturdy table between my TV and a radiator. Since it’s still rather warm out, I haven’t had the need to turn on the radiator so there is no current danger to my fishies...

However cooler temperatures are rapidly approaching so I was wondering if there are any problems (aside from algae) of placing my tank on my window sill? I also figure this would provide great lighting for my plants.

Thank you!

P.S. The tank has a heater so colder temperatures should not be a problem.

We had a ten gallon in the window and (a) too hot in the summer (sun warms up the water rapidly and I simply couldn't cool it down fast enough) and (b) had to put the heater on 85 to keep the tank on 75 in the winter... We are in the Washington DC area, so I guess not much temp difference with PA
That wasn't the biggest thing though, it was the algae growth that finally made us move the tank...

Thanks for the info.

I think I'm going to give it a shot. Worse that could happen is I move it and keep the radiator at a very low setting!

New question: I'm unsure how well the window sill would hold up under my tank. What's a good way to tell if the sill can support my tanks weight?

I tried sitting on it and all was good. I even had the tank there for about 30 minutes until i chickened out...

I myself would sit on windowsill, jump up and down on it, and call it good :)

If the window gets very cold you can always put some styrofoam at the back of the tank to keep an even temp in the tank. If you have enough live plants growing well in the tank the sunlight wont cause algae, though the heat might be a problem in the summer.

most if not all window sills can support the weight of the tank you are using. the issue I would look into is how stable is the sill. most sills are set at a slight angle or are not large.
if portions of your tank hang over the sill edge..that would be more of a concern.

Well 1 gallon of water weighs 8.33 pounds, so a 10 gallon tank would weigh like 83.3 pounds not including gravel. The window sill mgith be able to hold up, but I don't know how it will do with the pressure or having a tank permenantly there.
