Hi guys,

I know someone here can solve this for me!!!

Here is a thread I have going with Hagen tech concerning my brand new 205.
They haven't answered my second post yet, but I figured I'd be better off asking a community like Aquaria anyway ;)

I recently installed a Fluval 205 in my aquarium. Water flow looks good, but I noticed that particles floating near intake were not being sucked up, so I put my finger over it intake hole to feel for suction ~ I could not feel any at all. Is this right? Or is something not working properly?

We thank you for taking the time to contact us.

You should definitely feel a suction when placing your finger near the intake. Make sure the intake stem, along with the rubber adapter that connects the intake stem to the hose, are completely submerged. Also, the intake hose should be as straight as possible, without any dips or loops, where air can possibly get trapped. Make sure the impeller well area is free of debris or build up, which can impede the spinning motion of the impeller. I hope this information helps.

The filter is for a turtle tank that is only a little over half full, therefore the top rubber connector can't be in the water unless I were to cut the intake tube in about half and use more hose.
Can you explain why it is necessary for that part to be submerged? Also how much suction should I feel ~ should my finger stick to it?
Also, why is there ample output? And again, is it necessary to suction the output tube to the side of the tank?
If I understand the physics a little, maybe I can get it to function properly.

I agree with mgamer, as long as there is water flowing there is suction. I noticed this yesterday......I have two fluval 304s running in my 36 gallon, overkill, I know. I had some plant debris stuck on the intake, when I cleaned the intake basket off and replaced it I noticed that I could not feel suction when I put my hand near either intake, at the same time the water was shooting from the back of the tank to the front glass, since I water in the process of changing the water and had lowered the level. It was flowing with great force, yet I could not feel suction..........I purchased two flow meters to install this weekend but I think what you are noticing is normal.

The suction cups simply stabilize the intake and outlets for suport.

I have a Fluval 405, but to reitterate, if there is water coming out, then there is water going in. The question would be is it operating at peak performance and thus cycling properly?

You can always shut the filter off, and re-prime the canister to ensure that the internal pressure is as it should be. Especially in a new canister, if you did not pre-rinse and wet the medias and in addition, allow the prime to properly remove all of the air (bubbles seen from the outlet during the prime process during setup), then the pressure could be off. Doing this will ensure that this is not the case.
