What is most often the cause for water getting murky?

Is it algae? High Ammonia? new tank - murkiness wears off after a couple days?

Thanks for any help.
 
Bacterial bloom, frequent stirring up of substrate, underfiltration, algal bloom for green water phenomena and newly-setup tanks with substrate are a few I can mention.
 
Overfeeding? I had some real cloudy water after tossing in a couple of 'extra' tropical tablets for the corys!!

What a MESS!!! Cleared up (mostly) overnight tho :)
 
The other two that come to mind are feeder blocks and dry fert tabs of a cheap variety.
