I would like to ask for peoples thoughts on whether I should wash some USED Gravel I received with a second hand 6 ft tank I purchased.

Gravel had been in the tank for about 10 years and is heavy with lots of small grit.

Is it ok to put this gravel into a new setup without a thorough wash and will the fine sediments just settle into the tank?

Any suggestions for the best way to wash large amounts of gravel easily?

:help:

I say wash it or throw it away. Don't know what type of dieseases or pretty much anything been growing and swimming in there. Unless you know it is 100% safe, wash and reuse, but if it has green algae over it, toss it or buy a bunch of algae eaters.

I would was it in warm water and bleach. Then rinse repeatedly and let soak in some fresh water with a heavy dose of de-chlor.

I usually fill a 5 gal pail with about 6 inches of gravel, and stick a hose in all the way to the bottom, and keep stirring the gravel while the bucket over flows to get the fine stuff out.

I personally would be alittle Leary about using someone else's gravel, its fairly cheep and not worth the risk, IMO, but if you do, the before mentioned suggestions are the way to go..........
