How are they rated? By what i mean like heres my main question There is a Eheim 2213 classis rated for 65 gallons and pumps out 116 GPH and then they have a Eheim ecco 2231 for a 35 gallon and it puts out 127GPH. Seems like the one rated for 65 gallons would be higher not lower so how are these rated? off what if not GPH'S

1) They are different models (ECCO and classic)

2) also the amount of surface area for biological and chemical filtration is factored

I'm running a 2213 on a 40g - fabulous. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it's a little harder to clean since it doesn't have the baskets of some other Eheim or Fluval models. A minor problem. It is the quietest filter (we have it in our bedroom) I have ever not heard. Efficient, economical, quiet - it don't get no better than that!

I have an ECCO, Im pleased with it but you have to read the manual to open and maintain them :D

They are rated according to the biological load they can carry. A more efficient, slower flow across a larger biological substrate can filter a larger tank than a biowheel.
good luck

The 2213, depending on how you pack the canister, allows no bypass. It truly makes the most of the water flow. The intake is on the bottom. The water enters from the bottom and must pass though all of your filtration material before it can return to the tank. Because it has no basket, the bypass is probably non-existent and also allows the entire space of the canister to be used. The downside is that o-ring that you have to wrestle with.

If you want canister filtration, I would go with something a little easier to clean and maintain. You don't necessarily need that efficiency. Or a filter that lasts 30 years.

But then again, if you value reliability and silent operation, you may really need a filter which can last for 30 years.

I think the new 2213, 2215, 2217 have the o-ring integrated into the pump housing so that it does not come loose easily like the older ones did. I have an older one, and just ordered a new one that has the new o-ring. Also easy to identify since the new o-ring is red.

Got the 2213 new off ebay for $56 + $10 shipping, a great deal, check it out... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20758&item=2331271757
