i'm very worried about it. it has this weird algae like substance on its sides and top. is it okay? it doesn't seem to be acting different or anything, but i'm not sure what this stuff growing on it is.

i don't have the stats of the water because i don't have any water testing kits. i just got it tested today at petco and it was "perfect" as they put it. um, its tank mates are a pleco, 2 african cichlids, 1 jack dempsey, and 2 mollys. it is a 30 gallon. what does filtration mean? i am such a noob at this hobby. =[

Well... your tank is way too small for the fish you have. The pleco will get 18 inches+, the Ahli will get 8 inches+, and the dempsey will get 11 inches+. The mollies will soon become snacks. I would either get a 75+ gallon or get rid of the fish you have. Filtration is what kind of filter you have on the tank.

i have a penguin 200 i think as my filter. i am returning the pleco on monday. um.....one of my mollys is pregnant and i expect its babies to be snacks for my other fish. as for size of my tank, i am upgrading soon as i move it downstairs.

Also I do not suggest mixing american cichlids with african cichlids. You can post pics of the 2 africans and I can identify them for you.

The mollies will seriously become snacks. As soon as the Dempsey hits 3 inches, the mollies will dissapear.

i was fully informed about the whole american/african combo being a bad idea when i set up the tank, that is why i kept the africans in the tank for 2 months before getting the dempsey. now all of my africans are bigger then the dempsey and have more dominance over the tank.

is there anything else that i can do to help my electric blue?

You could try something like melafix; usually works on skin problems.

Is the substance white? If it is it could be ick.
