hey there i have a 6 foot tank been going for about 6 - 7 months now, but now all these little bubbles are showing up all over the tank on substrate and live rock what is this and how do i stop it.:help:
what colour are the bubbles shiny green or red or a dull green? i`m guessing its bubble algae a very common problem & spreads very fast you can buy a crab called a emerald crab ( mithrax sculptus ) they eat this like mad & are fairly reef safe with a tank that big i`m guessing 2 - 4 would rid you of the problem............ what ever you do don`t pop them within the tank makes them spread like wild fire i also have this problem myself i have 1 emerald crab but need another two i feel as only one side is clear within my tank....
Sounds like the start of cyanobacteria problem, not Valonia algae. some pics would help. Does it grow in a mat on the substrate or is it idividual green bubbles growing kind of like grapes? If it is like the grapes, then I'd say Valonia, if it grows in a mat with O2 bubbles trying to escape, it is Cyanobacteria.
Matt
thanks for the info people here are some pics.
also i have seen in my tank the green bubbles but only one or two but not now. the substrate feels like a thick bed of carpet.
Your combined gph is about 1050gph..As we only know its a 6 foot tank, and not the exact gallonage, i have listed three common 6 foot tank sizes and stated in red what is classed as the ammount of flow required ( 25 x water volume circulated per hour ) for your reef..
125 gallon 72" x 18" x 21" - 3125gph
150 gallon 72" x 18" x 28" - 3750gph
180 Gallon 72" x 24" x 25" - 4500gph
I would say this is the cause of your problem. You are way way too low on flow for the system. Would i would do is think about purchasing some really good flow powerheads, like Hydor Koralia #4's. These will give you 1200 gph each and you should buy enough of these to provide enough flow for your tank..
