What to do with my now empty 10 gallon....?

So I finally got my 30 gallon up and running. I've moved all the occupants from the 10 and bought a few more. They are loving it, though they still have the small tank mentality. I'm hoping that they will occupy more of the tank than just the bottom eventually. While I've got you here, what do you suggest at a top level schooling fish?

Anyway...so now I have an empty 10 gallon tank that I'm going to re-vamp. I'll be using sand as the substrate and may try some live plants a little later on. Of course I'll do a fishless cycle (again...). I'd really like to try a green spotted puffer or 2 in it. What do you think about that? I've done some research on them but there is still much to learn. Any tips/personl experience you could share with me would be greatly appreciated.

If GSPs aren't a good idea, what would be a fun fish to put in there?

Thanks in advance!
Brandi

i know its really boring but a quarantine tank and or hospital / fry tank would be the best thing to do . but as you probably dont want to do that maybe some dwarf puffers ? planted would be better for them . or you could go the normal route of tetras and dwarf gourami . maybe some shrimpies??

GSP's need a lot more room than a 10 gallon so those are out .

I was just researching the needs of a GSP and I'm learning that. I'm trying to think if it was GSPs for sure at my LFS or if they were indeed Dwarfs. I have tetras in my 30 and don't want to repeat that (OMGoodness! The Serpaes and Bloodfins are schooling together! lol). I had a heartbreaking experience with a Dwarf Gourami and don't want to go through that again, either.

I really had my heart set on the GSP, but I'm willing to wait till I can take care of them properly to get some. I have a small QT tank, so I don't need another. Not interested in breeding just yet, so I don't need a fry tank. The only shrimp I can get locally are ghosts. But I have considered making the 10 a cherry shrimp/snail tank.

Any other ideas?

I agree with the the quarantine/hospital tank idea. It always helps to have one and as long as you plan on getting small fish such as platies and danios, it will make a good sized quarantine/hospital tank.

how about some panda cories like 6 or 7 ? theyre pretty active .

umm....... eerrrrrr... stocking a 10 is soo hard

i know what you mean about dwarf gouramis i gave up on them after 5 . never again !!!

Yeah. I was looking at those, too.

I did like the Green Tiger Barbs that I found the other day. They had several different other species, too. If I got 2 of several different barb would they all school together? Or would the barbs get along with the tetras in my 30? I still have some stocking to do there, too.

tiger barbs need swimming room , and they are also unpredictable , ive had good luck with mine but they are in a tank that has semi aggressive fish only . i dont know anything about other barbs i think rubies are meant to be quite peaceful .

i'm not sure whether they're schoolers or not but i'm pretty sure they'd be comfortable with more of their kind. i'm talking about Hatchet Fish. I think they look really cool and if i had more room in my tanks i'd get some. They're not super colorful but they look completely different then any other fish (freshwater that is) and anyone that looked at your tanks would probably notice them first as they're not your average fish. they are also top dwellers which is what you were looking for. Tigers barbs would be good but #1. they're not just top dwellers and #2. they need to be in a group of atleast 5 and then you shouldn't have to worry about nipping. mine NEVER nip or chase any other fish in my tank, they're very well behaved i think. as for the 10g. if you don't want to do a quarantine tank (but a very good idea) what about a shrimp tank? i've always wanted to do a shrimp tank but don't have the space. i love ghost shrimp and red cherry shrimp but i think they need to have a planted tank (not sure though). Anyway, you should definetly give the hatchets some thought, i dont think you would regret it! they're super cute!
