His birthday is October 27, and he wants a Jack Dempsey. However, the aquarium I am going to give him is just a 10 gallon. Are there any other meat eaters that can survive in a 10 gallon? if not, I will just give him a jack dempsey and then once it gets to big give him my current 30 gallon. also, i haven't set up the aquarium yet, but i am planning on doing it either today or tomorrow. will that give it enough time to cycle before i get the fish on his birthday?

If you are seeding it using media from your 30g, I'd say it will be cycled by then, or atleast very close to being done.

If your 30g is very healthy and you're planning on using it to kick start the 10g cycle anyway, you could just hang the 10g filter on the back of your 30g and let it run there until you guys set up the 10g on his birthday.

okay. i will probably go shopping today for the filter. and the 30 gallon is super healthy. the water is crystal clear and all the fish are super active. how much water should i use from the 30 gallon to the 10 gallon though? (i.e. 50% of the 10 gallon?)

ok. thanks. also, my little brother wants to use these clear rocks (not gravel) they are like sold as tank decorations. i don't remember what they are called, but u use them in the game moncolla. is that ok to use or do i have to use gravel?
