Here is a little tip for those amongst us who never really restart your computer unless neccesary..What this will do is clear out idle tasks and processes that are running in the background and will release tied up memory..

1. Right click on an empty spot on your desktop and select New - Shortcut.

2. Type (without quotation marks) "%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks" in the box.

3. Click Next.

4. Give your shortcut a nice name like “Clear Memory”.

5. Click Finish and you’re done.

Tested and works fine on Windows 2000, XP and Vista..

Enjoy....

I'f i'm not mistaken, that clears the RAM, which gets around a cold boot of the computer (which can be timely for some people)

good job niko!

Your not mistaken, it does...and yes, it also gets around having the need for a re-boot...

So is it suppose to do anything when you click on it? I did this and clicked it and nothing happened, does it just work and not show you anything?

computers last longer if never rebooted anyway. :) each time you reboot, the electrical pulses cause minute wear and tear on all the solder joints and circuits..

For those who are wondering what it actually does..It does not show anything visably, its all in the background and behind the scenes..What it does is clear anything that is idle from the memory process. It free up the memory by terminating anything that the system has set to idle and return the memory addresses back to free..knock on effect is that your current running process now have more memory addresses to get allocated to them, which keeps the system running quicker as programs and data that are stored in RAM are faster, and this all provideds the user with a quicker experience..

Sometimes you may think that its not done anything, but, it actually has, and the extra memory addresses that have been made available are just not been allocated yet...

Its a very simple routine, but also very effective...

Glad people like...i think its cool...Especially on memory hoggin Vista ;)

what about MAC?

This will not work for a MAc as its windows executed command..There more than likely is a command to do something similar on a MAc, but, i have no idea what...sorry...

Cool trick. Now if I could only get my computer to stop loading punkbuster for call of duty every time it starts..lol

Thats quite an easy one..

NOTE

Use of msconfig can cause problems if you select an incorrect startup program and it could effect your computer on next reboot. I will not be held responsibile for any issues that arise.

Click START, select RUN, type in the following without quotes " msconfig "

click on the tab at the far right called " startup "..

Look in the list for the entry for punk buster, and remove the tick from the box, click APPLY, then click OK...

Reboot, and you should be done as that will stop punkbuster from running when your computer loads up to the desktop....If you still want to take advantage of punkbuster, simply start the program via your start menu and it will manually start the service for you...

I love msconfig!

Everyones always asking me to do it to their comps since they seen how fast mine boots up. I only have the basics at start up. If you think you're going to use something a lot just make a quick launch bar and move the shortcut to it.

lol...i thought it would be a potential damage limitation than talking someone through using registry editer and deleting registry entries..
