Anyone watched it yet? That show's awsome! Deep divers going to the twilight zone and pulling up new species of damsels, angels, hawkfish, pseudochromis... Everything! And at the end, they come up with 2 bucketfulls of fish (including a glowing damsel and new butterfly species) and a deep dive in a specialised suit to the actual abyss! 100/10!

They capture them, and every 2-3 feet to the surface they delicately puncture their swim bladders with a sterilised needle to release the gas that the divers take 2-4 hours to release; They have plenty of time to do it. The reason they take so long to release the gas is that if they don't, bubbles will go to their brain and heart, killing the brain and giving them a heart attack.

After they name, class, measure, etc the fish, they release them.

EDIT: I forgot to mention they study the fish over a few minutes in a large boat directly over where they got them.

i've heard the thing about the swim bladders before but that could be the stress of a lifetime for fish, being puctured and being in a place you never seen before without a choice...

still, if it takes that long to get up, how are the fish gonna eat being carried in a bucket? eat the other specimens in the bucket?

Shipping proceeses are much longer, and also have other issues (water quality, parasites, etc.) yet very few fish will have a problem with starving during the shipping process.

It can't be much more than about 12 hours before they get realeased... now, my SW fish, being fed about once a day, will have about a 22-23 hour gap between meals (add the extra hour or two since the nori isn't taken up right away)... if my fish are dead, I do not know how they are swimming about the tank.
